Ahead of Google launching its Android 8.0 aka Android O version soon, Xiaomi is upgrading its smartphone portfolio to the latest available firmware. The Chinese smartphone giant is going to rollout Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 OS for its existing devices.
The MIUI 9 rollout will begin as early as next week, with the first device being Xiaomi’s former flagship Mi 5 smartphone on Monday, August 7. This was confirmed by Xiaomi via MIUI’s official Weibo handle and on the community forum.
Xiaomi debuted Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 with the launch of Xiaomi Mi 5X last week. The new software brings series of improvements over the current version of Android Marshmallow-based MIUI 8. Xiaomi has always considered the software a huge part of its product and experience.
By constantly reminding users of the slightest changes that every new software update brings to old phones, Xiaomi is making sure users value the upgrades.
Google’s Android 7.0 Nougat was itself a massive improvement from Android Marshmallow, with key upgrades such as multi window options, night mode, bundled notification, improved security update and several other new features to improve user experience. Xiaomi’s MIUI 9 based on this version of Android will add some of its own value-adds to make this change historic for its users.
From what we’ve seen in the Mi 5X, the new MIUI 9 brings new features such as Universal search, Smart Assistant, a redesigned dock bar, Smart App launcher and much more. But to get the new software, devices must be compatible.
MIUI 9 release time-table and eligible devices
Xiaomi has laid out a release timetable for the MIUI 9 rollout. Based on that, Xiaomi will release the new software to the current flagship Mi 6 smartphone and Redmi Note 4X on August 11. This will be the second batch of software update.
A total of 12 Xiaomi models will be upgraded to MIUI 9 in August. The third wave of MIUI 9 update will cover a wide range of models, including Xiaomi Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi 4x, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro and Redmi 4X. The software update will hit these devices on August 25.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the older Xiaomi phones will be updated at a later date sometime in late September. But the Redmi 2A and Redmi 1/1S won’t be getting the new software. MIUI 9’s release is currently exclusive to China, and there will be a Global ROM for users around the world. There’s no exact release on the global ROM just yet.
MIUI 9: New features
Xiaomi MIUI 9’s biggest highlight is the optimisation, which will make your phone faster and load apps quicker than before. The new image feature search can find images by typing in keywords. There’s also a Smart Assistant, which is similar to Apple’s Spotlight feature, to search for pretty much anything on your phone.
If you are fond of themes, there will be three new ones – No Boundary, Colour Fantasy, and, Cool Black –
for your phone. MIUI 9 will have a new lock-screen design, new shortcut for torch and split-screen
