Nationwide Mobile Number Portability in India

What is Mobile Number Portability?

Mobile number portability (MNP) is a feature provided by TRAI which enables mobile telephone users to retain their mobile telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another. In simple words if you have got frustrated with your current mobile operator and the only thing that has been holding you back from switching has been your number, you can take a breath of relief. MNP will enable you to switch your operator but still retain your contact number.

When did MNP came in India?

This service in India is available from 20th January’11 across all operators. The cost to switch will be just Rs.19. To understand the procedure of availing this service, please refer this document provided by TRAI.

What is Nationwide Mobile Number Portability?

When first Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was launched, it was restricted to MNP within same state. It means if your number is of Karnataka, and you are shifting to Maharashtra, then you can take the same number to Maharashtra (unless you are willing to pay roaming charges). The full or nationwide mobile number portability (MNP) will allow consumers to change service provider in any part of the country while retaining their existing number. In view of implementation of full MNP some changes will be required in the MNP Regulations 2009 (as amended). Accordingly, draft amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2009, has been prepared,” Trai said in a statement.

The Department of Telecom on November 3, 2014 issued amendment to the MNP Licence Agreement and asked telecom operators to implement full MNP within a period of six months from the date of amendment to the licences. In the new amendment Trai wants to introduce a clause to safeguard interest of post-paid mobile service users who face disconnection in new network even after clearing all their dues of their old service provider. The regulator has fixed timeline on both the old or donor service provider and new or recipient service provider for clear communication about dues cleared by the subscriber to ensure continuity of service.

Telecom regulator TRAI has issued draft regulations to facilitate full mobile number portability which is set to start from May 3, 2015.

Mobile Number Tracker Software

Do you know how to trace a mobile number? Mobile Number Tracker is a service which allows you to trace a mobile number with its owner’s name (if available), address (city & state), telecom operator. However it would be stupid to make assumption that information provided by this service is accurate all the times. It tries to give you the most accurate information, but sometimes it can be wrong as well.

How does Mobile Number Tracker Works?

Mobile Number Tracker works on the data provided by TRAI (which is publicly available). It displays this information on Google Maps which is more understandable. So the first comes is how a mobile number in India is designed? The way to split the numbers is defined in the National Numbering Plan 2003 as XXXX-NNNNNN where XXXX is the Network operator, NNNNNN is the subscriber numbers. So let’s say when you enter a number 9035092000, we split the first 4 digits of this number, and try to look-up for operator circle & operator name.

What all mobile tracking softwares are available?

Frankly, there are many, but none which can give current location of a mobile number. Though there are ways to get current location of a mobile; for example on Apple phones you can use Find My Friends. For all other mobile number tracking softwares, you can try one of the following software (based on your platform; Windows OS, iOS, Android, Windows Phone)

  • Telephone Directory: It is a Desktop Client by which you can trace out Mobile Codes, STD Codes, ISD Codes from your computer itself even when you are offline. It is available for FREE Download.
  • Mobile Number Locator (Java OS phones): Mobile Number Locator traces the information about any mobile number code like Service Provider, State, or Reference City. It is useful for tracing out from where a user got a missed call. Mobile Number Locator is valid for India only. This is specially for phones which are running on Java OS.

If you are aware of any tracking software which are better than the mentioned ones, then please let us know via comments. We shall include them in our list.
